Rule variations to change your game

Flag and touch football are entertaining games that allow people of all ages to enjoy the game of football without being physically beaten up at the end of the day. The great thing about flag football is that you can change up some of the rules to give the game variety. Let us go over a few options to keep things interesting in your league.

First instead of using ten yard markers for first down try using a smaller field with only one line to cross for a first down. In one of our leagues all team start at the same point and they can only make one first down. This keeps the games quicker for all parties and increases attempts at the end zone.

Secondly when you are going for an extra point give options to increase the points such as placing the ball at the two for one point or the five for a two point conversion. With younger kids we like to give the option to run it in for one point or throw it in for two. You can use your own spin on this to create rules.

For an extreme variation we like to make a rule when you can pass from anywhere on the field. This brings a bit of chaos and we don’t recommend it for leagues but it can be fun. You will find that teams will throw the ball all over the field bringing on turnovers and high scoring action.

For flag football leagues to up the difficulty on defense we will at times remove all but one flag. You will see how difficult it is when you only have one flag to grab onto at a time.

Rule variations can be fun, I recommend trying them for a one day tournament before implementing them in any leagues.
